Common Dental Emergencies

Toothache

After rinsing with warm water to dislodge any food particles caught in the tissue surrounding the tooth, carefully floss on both sides. If your symptoms persist or the area feels warm to the touch, schedule an appointment with us.

Soft Tissue Cuts

Apply pressure to the wound with a clean washcloth or sterile gauze until it stops bleeding, then apply a cold compress to minimize swelling. Call your doctor if the bleeding persists.

Knocked Out Baby Tooth

Although a knocked-out baby tooth cannot be replaced, we encourage you to schedule a visit for your child so we can check for other injuries and determine whether a space maintainer is necessary.

Knocked Out Permanent Tooth

Please contact our office as soon as possible so we can prepare for your arrival. Hold the tooth by the crown and avoid touching the root. If it’s dirty, gently rinse the tooth with milk or water. Replace the tooth in its socket if you can, then bite down on a clean piece of gauze to keep it in place until your appointment. If this isn’t possible, put the tooth in a small glass of saliva or milk and bring it with you to our office.

Chipped or Broken Tooth

Place the broken tooth piece in a small cup of milk or saliva, as we may be able to reattach it. To minimize swelling, rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress. Call our office to make an appointment.
