What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are most commonly used to restore a tooth that has more damage or decay than a dental filling can repair, but they can also be used for cosmetic purposes, to restore a tooth following root canal therapy, to hold a bridge in place, or to replace a missing tooth when attached to a dental implant.

Getting a crown starts with digital impressions of your teeth and bite so that we can design your restoration. After removing the damaged areas of the tooth, a second impression is taken to ensure that your crown fits securely. At this point, we place a temporary crown on your tooth and send our design to a dental laboratory for fabrication. Once your crown is finished, you’ll return to our office and it will be bonded in place.

Are You a Good Candidate for Crowns?

If you have a tooth that has more damage than a dental filling can repair, you may be a candidate for a dental crown. Crowns may also be needed after a root canal, to support a bridge, to improve the appearance of a tooth, or to restore a missing tooth when attached to a dental implant.

There are four common types of crowns:

Ceramic

This type of crown is often used for teeth that are visible when smiling as they are made from a porcelain-based material that retains the look of your natural teeth.

Porcelain Fused to Metal

These crowns are known for their strength and durability while also allowing for a natural-looking restoration.

Gold Alloys

These may be used when more strength is needed, particularly for patients who grind their teeth at night.

Base Metal Alloys

These are strong and corrosion-resistant and are often used when there is less existing tooth structure available to support the crown restoration.

Yes, dental insurance normally covers crowns that are medically necessary.
Brushing for two minutes twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and seeing your dentist for preventive care every six months are all you need to do to maintain a dental crown.
In most circumstances, tooth-colored ceramic crowns are recommended, however patients who grind their teeth or clench their jaws may want to consider a metal or gold alloy crown if they need to have a molar crowned, as these habits can put a great deal of stress on restorations.
